Wednesday Workout Tip: Try/Buy a Foam Roller

You may be asking – what the heck is a foam roller?

Well, a foam roller is a handy little device used to stretch/roll out your tight muscles (check out the picture below). You can purchase them from any exercise equipment store (I bought mine at the Running Room). They cost about $30 to $40. Yes, they are a little pricey, but trust me they are worth their weight in gold.

How do you use them? Each roller comes with an instruction booklet on how to roll out your different muscle groups. My favourites include the rolls for the back, glutes and IT bands.

Now, I will warn you the rolling process doesn’t feel all that great at the beginning. You will likely have sore biceps from pushing and pulling yourself over and across the roller. But stick with it – keep rolling. Roll after your walks/runs/workday. Have a bath and then roll out those warmed up muscles.

The more your roll and/or stretch the better. I hope to write a post this Friday or early next week on the benefits of stretching for both the short- and long-term.

Happy rolling.

Agreed, these are definitely worth their weight in gold! Try laying on your back, the roller in line with your spine, now try slowly making snow angels with your arms. Feels incredible 🙂

I tried one for the first time last week. It hurt to use, but I think that if I keep using it will get better!
