live it active

Wednesday workout tip: Play with your kids

…or your friends/cousins kids if you don’t have any of your own.

Most kids are pretty active. If your kids or friends/cousins kids do not fit into the active category I suggest you turn off the TV, hand them a piece of chalk/skipping rope/water gun and get them outside. This may be a bit presumptuous if it isn’t your kid, so a word of caution on that one.

So let’s assume that your kid(s) are active. Do you play with them? Do you take time to play catch, road hockey, skip, hop scotch, or Super Soaker wars? If not, you should. Not only will it be a fun way to engage with your kids and their friends, but you will have an incredible workout. Seriously, skipping is one of the best cardio activities out there. And don’t be discouraged when you can only skip for 20 seconds and are left gasping for breath while your daughter or son can skip for 20 minutes without breathing (or so it seems).

OK, so what if your kids are old (like me)? Go on a hike together, walk around the block a couple of times, rent bikes or canoes (if you’re in Guelph, hit up the Speed River or Guelph Lake). Sign up for a 5 KM run together. Make it a competition or don’t – do whatever works and is the most enjoyable for both parties. And kids my age, remember, you can always ask your parents to play too.

So get out there and play with your kids (or parents). You’ll have fun, bond and squeeze in a workout – awesome.

Great tips! I love going out to play golf with my parents, or go for a bike ride – fun and active. Good quality time spent together and you burn a few calories while you’re at it.
